Awesome Action

Awesome Action
— by Eric Elshere

If you are looking for some of the most fun fishing all year round, well it is here. Even though the fish are out after the spawn it can be absolutely awesome. The Topwater bite is on and hot. Come the middle of June or when the shad start to pop up around the lake, the bass will be eating off the surface. This is when you go to the topwater baits to catch them. I have a few pointers to help you out as you chose tackle and baits to throw at these fish, plus some hot spots to look for.

If you are going to chose any rod to throw topwater baits with, it should be medium

action. You don’t want a heavy rod due to not having action to move the bait at best. I prefer to use a 6’ to 6’6” rod in medium actions. This gives you the little extra snap in the rod to move the bait at best and to not pull the treble hooks out of the bass’ mouth. There is fishing reel preferred when throwing these. Try and get a reel with a high gear ratio, preferably 6.2:1 or higher. I like to throw my baits with a G. Loomis rods and a Shimano Curado or Chronarch reels. These have good drag systems and they won’t give out on you.

Now the baits. Well in my book there are 2 key baits that will catch you the most fish. These are the walking baits and popping baits. These baits serve their purposes at their own special times.

For the walking baits there is really only one real choice in my opinion, the Lucky Craft Sammy 100. This is the best overall bait there is. They are made in Japan so the quality is 100% awesome. These baits have the best finishes and action of all the walking baits made. These baits come in a variety of colors so you should match it to what is in your lake at the time and what the fish are eating.

As for the popping baits I recommend the Buddha Baits popper. These baits have the best spitting and chugging of all the baits I have fished. These too come in a variety of colors so match what they are eating and what is in the lake.

If you are looking for the right areas to fish look for the shad schools or just

a good weedy area. The best are flats that have a shallow break in the bottom and the weed line is very noticeable. These are the best areas. Fish swim up and down the weed lines looking for prey to feed on and these little offerings on the surface are so tempting to eat. Key in on these areas and I bet you will be very happy with the results.

I hope these little hints will help you out as you go out and try to catch your surface fish. This is the most fun way to land Bass. To see the bass come up and smash the surface plug is amazing. If you need to purchase the Sammy 100’s then take a look here at Bigfishtackle.com and they have what you need. He best prices around. Good luck and pick up these baits and have the most fun bass fishing you will have all year round.
